MYSTERY OF COMALCALCO
INSCRIBED BRICKS
Burial Urns found are same type used in Asia
MOST UNIQUE MAYA SITE IN MEXICO
Masons symbols (below photo at right) used on bricks were the same as were used in Rome and Greece. Perhaps, evidence that there was a connection between Romans and the people of Tabasco 1000 years before Columbus sailed?
Buildings at site were built with baked bricks, seashells were used as mortar, (above) only one of it's type. The Rest of the Maya World used carved limestone to construct their cities.
Only ten years after Pakal came to power and after many wars and decapitations, the Inscribed bricks show that Comalcalco came under control of Palenque. The Emblem of Palenque can be seen as proof.
HOW MANY PRECEEDED COLUMBUS?
......there is evidence to suggest that there was transatlantic contact thousands of years before Columbus. In Paris in 1976, the mummy of Egyptian Pharaoh Rameses II was found to contain tobacco. The implications were clear; the tobacco plant, thought to have been introduced to the west by Sir Walter Raleigh was known in the Ancient World as early as 1200 BC. In 1992, the German toxicologist Svetlana Balabanova examined mummies in the Munich Museum. Extensive evidence was found of high amounts of cocaine having been absorbed into the bodies. Cocaine is the active ingredient of the coca plant, native only to the Americas. Thus the possibility stands that coca leaves were being imported to Ancient Egypt via transoceanic contact with the Americas.
Also, in the eastern provinces of Mexico (Tabasco) are great stone heads, each weighing several tonnes, positioned at the centres of the Olmec peoples who thrived between 1200 and 400 BC. They display Negroid features, suggesting the presence of black Africans in the American continent at this time. Other statues show Semitic features, suggesting contact with Mediterranean seafarers.
LA Venta Parque, Villahermosa Tabasco Mexico
Comalcalco Museum, Tabasco Mexico
If you happened upon this ancient city in the days of its glory you may not have realized the pyramids and palace structures were made of brick. The Maya used stucco to cover the tiles, and carved ornate reliefs into the stucco, coloring the walls finally with brilliant earth and sea-tone dyes.
In Classic times, the city was believed to be allied with Palenque, perhaps a military and spiritual outpost. But there is also evidence of its trade connection with Tikal and a few Usumacinta River Valley communities. The tomb of the nine lords in Comalcalco has the smae carving on the wall that can be found in King Pakal's tomb in Palenque.
ROMAN ARTIFACTS FOUND NEAR SIGHT
Other artifacts have been uncovered at the site that add to the overall mystery. A pair of water pipes unique to Comalcalco are on display at the Comalcalco Museum at the ruin site. Inside the museum you can also see carved figurines and heads that seem to portray features uncharacteristic to the Maya. Some of these carvings and masks sport beards and hats, uncommon in the Mayan world.
