Tabasco
To someone who has visited the Mexican State of Tabasco, the mere mention of the name conjures up the image of exuberant green jungle landscapes, raging rivers, gigantic cascading waterfalls, lively cities and municipalities filled with endless interesting places to see. The feeling of history surrounds you.
The Capital of Tabasco, Villahermosa is surrounded by the ever present exaggeration of mother nature's beauty. It still preserves the tranquility of easy going small town but is noticeably a growing modern urban city offering a multitude of options for entertainment. It's infrastructure supports a large number of hotels, restaurants, museums, shopping malls and parks. The one trait seen over and over in the private sector as well as in business is the genuine desire of the people to meet your needs, to see that you are satisfied and that you love their home, of which they are very proud.
Approximately fifty kilometros to the northeast lies the small town of Comalcalco, small not in population (40,000) or just size really, but feel. A bustling city in the daytime and at midnight there are still people to be seen out walking in the city's streets enjoying and sometimes just looking for fresh night air, trying to cool themselves from the tropical days. The great maya temples and pyramids still stretch skyward, a living testimony to the people and culture immune to the ravages of time. The Ruins of Comalcalco, hold the answer to the question of Roman presence in Tabasco 1000 years before Columbus set sail for the Indies.
The Chontal Maya are still the dominant culture here. Tabasco is where hundreds of years ago the same ruins of today lay buried in the dense jungle as the "Conquest" began. This is where Cortéz was made a present of the "Malinche", the woman who helped facilitate the fall of Mesoamerica. Here the same Indians that fiercely defended their homeland for years against the Ipanish invasion would give the world a gift that would conquer Europe, change the face and destiny of Africa and spread through the tropics......chocolate. Comalcalco is the heart of Cacao country, a place where at one time, money grew on trees. Cacao a small bean found by an indian one day millennium ago, which was converted into chocolate and enamored the entire world. Learn about the Maya of this area and the time of Conquistadors, Cacao and the Gods.
To the south one will find Teapa, The" Portal to The Sierra Madre ". The mountain range dividing Chiapas and Tabasco. Here you can go to Madrigal and swim in the Puyateango River, take photos of the highest waterfall or trek through the jungle, most of Tabasco's jungle area is unexplored so, who knows....Tapijulapa is near here, it is the home of the masters of mimbre used in making furniture and they use it also in the making of toy dolls, bags etc. Close by is Villa Luz and the mysterious " Cave of the Blind Sardines " which still baffles scientists, or the caves of Conocá. The incredible " Cave of Marbles". Agua Blanca, one of the highest waterfall in Latin America, El Lagoon del Rosario, exotic cuisine, adventure, not to forget the beaches and much much more....
Tabasco has it all!
