Merida
Merida, Yucatan, economic and social centre of southeast Mexico, is a tourist destination of the first rank. It is known as the White City for its clean streets and houses, and it is a must when visiting theYucatan Peninsula. Merida is a perfect example of Colonial Mexico. The Spanish conqueror Francisco de Montejo founded Merida in 1542 on the site of a former Maya city he destroyed.
Regional dishes, traditional music and regional dances are preformed in restaurants, theatres and shops housed in palatial mansions along Paseo de Montejo, a boulevard fashioned after Paris' Champs Elyse. Merida was named by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage in 2000, that very same year the OAS (Organization of American States) gave Merida the recognition of American Cultural Capital, winning this prize over important cities like Arlington, Toronto and Vina del Mar. Progreso, Merida's port city, is only 30 kilometers north.
In Merida, Yucatan the traveler can find a wide range of interesting sights strolling the streets and visiting points of interest such as museums, parks, markets, malls, boutiques and stores selling handcrafts and typical clothing. At night Merida becomes alive with it's open-air cafes, first class restaurants, serenades, concerts, discotheques, night clubs, or horse drawn carriages.
You can experience the flavors that have earned it a well-deserved place of honor within Mexican gastronomy. Yucateco food ranges from fresh seafood and traditional Maya cuisine with dishes including Cochinita Pibil to fine continental fare.
Merida will satisfy the most demanding tastes. There are accommodations from family guest houses to luxury hotels, Haciendas, Travel agencies, car and coach rentals, an International Airport, Restaurants, Banks, Malls and anything else tourist might require to complete their stay in this beautiful Mexican provincial city.
There are three main reasons to visit Merida: first, to try tasty Yucateco dishes; second, to use it as a base for touring Uxmal, Chichen Itza and other Maya ruins; and third, to take part in " Sundays in Merida " when the streets of the old city are closed to traffic, and the downtown plaza fills with food booths and native craftspeople selling their wares at excellent prices.
Cancun's Beaches
The beaches are probably one of the main reasons for your visit. The fine, incredibly white sand of the Caribbean lines the beaches in Cancun. The water of the Caribbean Sea is unusually warm with incredibly blue water and, most of the times, is very calm. Take a look at any beach, at almost any time of the day and you will see people enjoying the ocean waves.
Topless bathing is an activity that is accepted in Cancun and many of the surrounding areas along the Riviera Maya. Total nudity is rare (as well as illegal), especially on the major beaches.
Hotel Zone
The Hotel Zone is the area of Cancun where hotels and beachfront condominiums line the beaches of this incredible Caribbean coastline. On the inland side of Cancun lies Laguna Nichupte, a lagoon that is home to abundant marinas, waterfront restaurants, shopping malls, a couple of golf courses, and a few islands. There is an area near the center of all this which is known as the Party Zone which is home to the areas nightclubs and some of Cancun's upper-end restaurants and shopping malls..
Climate in Cancun
The climate in Cancun is generally hot the majority of the year. In Winter it is cooler and rainy, this is the time that the most rainfall is recorded.
The temperature hovers around 26°C for most of the year
La temperatura media oscila en torno a los 26º C, with a few variations.
